1. You probably don’t need a fully hand-coded site

A tradition web design project goes like this: following several meetings with a salesperson, a team of highly qualified programmers - in expensive city offices - will be assigned to your project and will manage and hand code a website for you. Three months later you will (hopefully) end up with a very nice custom built website – and will be hit with a massive bill anywhere upwards of $10,000.

The truth is that for most small business websites you don’t need all that.

95% of it is “reinventing the wheel.” Most business websites have the same underlying basic structure and function. You simply don’t need custom code written each and every time. It's a waste of your time and your money.

I don’t do that. And I don’t charge $10,000 either

I start from a pre-built template design that you select. I then customize this ie add in your header or your logo, any extra features you may desire etc and just a few weeks later you have a unique professional website for your business.

Note: I said "probably don't need". There are cases where this approach just wont work. If you have a need for a very unusual or complex design it has to be hand-coded in order to do everything you want. And if that is the case then I am sorry to say I cannot help you here. 2. More than 50% of most web design is data entry that you could probably do yourself.

Once the framework of your site is built it's time to get the content in ie the words and pictures etc. Now you probably wouldn't pay someone $120/hour to do that data entry for you - would you? But that is exactly what many businesses do by letting the highly trained and qualified web designer / programmer type or copy in their content.

Often you could just as easily do it yourself.

I do my job ie give you a well designed blank site and a means of easily adding the content yourself. And I set it up for you, so that you can easily do the rest.

Of course if you want me to put the content in for you I am more than happy to do so. And I won’t charge you $120/ hour either. Or even $60/hour.

3. Most webdesigners are techies

No disrespect intended, but many website designer companies are run by "techies". Thus they get caught up in the intricacies of the site design and lose sight of the fact that a website is just another marketing tool and should be designed with that in mind. Not knowing this they design beautiful (or not so beautiful) sites that no human can navigate through, or that have absolutely no chance of ranking well in google, or that take 3 or 4 minutes for all the images to load.

So your expensive, handcrafted website could be a complete marketing flop.

An easy to use, easy to find and easy to update site is the first thing any website designer should provide.... I do!!

As an aside, talking with technicians and designers, who often forget that not everyone speaks their lingo, can be confusing and difficult.
