When I build a website I make sure the site is as search engine friendly as possible. Sometimes this, plus some good content, is all that is required for that high rank to occur.

Yes page 1 is the place to be. But only page one for the search terms that matter.
Unless you have a full-time marketing team (= expensive) you simply cannot optimise your site well for a large number of search keyphrases. In doing so you risk spreading yourself so thin that you lose focus.
And to compound this, even though you might get more traffic (maybe) you still have to do something with it. And trying to get a small site to effectively convert for diverse traffic driven by many different keyphrases is very tricky. So you get a low conversion rate.
It is better to narrow it down to 5 or 10 solid traffic producing phrases and get a good ranking for these. And to feed this traffic into well optimised pages that produce lots of qualified inquiries or sales. That's what makes you money!

I have put together a two stage SEO package for all small business owners.
This typically takes 2 -3 months to complete. At the end of which you will have top ten rankings for 5 - 10 high volume quality keyphrases across Google, Yahoo or Bing.
Whilst no-one can guarantee how long these ranking will remain in page 1 they should be fairly stable for 6 - 12 months after completing the processes above.

By getting your site listed in the various and many directory sites I will get you quality backlinks to your site. It will also bring you some direct traffic.
- article submission
I will write one or more articles about your site and get its added to the many and various article directories and blogs. Each time it is published on another persons site the article will contain 1 or 2 links back to your site, building both backlinks and direct traffic at the same time
- Creation of a social network
Social networks like facebook, hubpages, and so on have a very high search volume and many of them are considered to be authority sites. By creating unique pages for your site on these various networks I can redirect some of their traffic to your site and gain you some high quality backlinks at the same time.
- social bookmarking
Social bookmarking sites such as stumblupon and delicious allow people to share sites they have found to be useful or interesting with others. These networks also get a great deal of traffic. I will bookmark your site in all the main bookmarking sites. This will be a quick source direct traffic and also another source of quality backlinks to your site.
Twitter is potentially so important its worth its own step. I will set up a twitter account for you and post to it for you on a regular basis. This will encourage some of the massive traffic on twitter to click through to your site. Currently may not do much for backlinks and your search engine ranking - however google and bing have started to include twitter feeds in their search results. So it's best to get in now!
Monitoring and Adjusting
I will monitor your site ranking weekly and make adjustments o your site and backlinks where required. The installation of Google Analytics will also allow you to see where your traffic is coming from and what search phrases are being used.
